The Libertines were formed in London in 1997 by Pete Doherty and Carl Barat, who were later joined by John Hassall and Gary Powell (although the line-up changed somewhat from when the band was first formed.) The band revolved around the relationship between Pete and Carl and their songwriting partnership. For the most part the band's success was overshadowed by the media's interest in Pete's growing drug dependency and the firey relationship between the two front-men.
