Talk about the Badlands music that you love here!| What should be plan to see and do on our trip to S. Dakota? | | We are hoping to travel to S. Dakota in September. Have you been there, maybe live there? What besides the badlands and Mt. Rushmore should we try to see? It is a totally unfamiliar place for me and I'll probably not ever get there twice, so what should I be sure not to miss?I saw a post that said the economy is poor there. Does that mean that the cost for traveling there will be lower? Maybe we can stay longer if it doesn't cost so much. What are the Indian Casinos like? Are they expensive? I don't gamble, so wouldn't be interested in gambling, but they have restaurants in them, right? Are they also hotels?Do you know what kind of clothing we will need for the weather there in September?Where are the airports? Rapid City? Where else? We might find it cost effective to fly there and rent a car for seeing the state. I don't even know what cities have airports!Sounds like I need to do some research. Anyone got any advice? | |
| | | Of all the places you've ever been, where did you view the best scenery? | | I've traveled to many of our 50 states and seen so much beauty in my own country. The most awe-inspiring of all, though, has been Wyoming. Magnificent mountains, hot mineral pools, rivers...just so much beauty! I have also loved las vegas, both city and countryside, and The Badlands. I could only imagine as I looked at them how hard it must have been for pioneers to cross them in covered wagons.Of all the places you've been, which have struck you as the most beautiful, and why?Karene I need to do some research. Anyone got any advice? | |
| | Loving life in Alberta | | Well I must say I feel like a new person today. I have been more active in the last month than I have in two years of being stifled. I have been helping my new room mate with her gardens and general yard upkeep, and we are now set to do some painting in her house. I'm feeling a lot better physically, being able to get some exercise. Even though my back still bothers me and I have to take frequent breaks, I still feel so much better over all. I have even started a low carbohydrate diet and have lost eight pounds so far this month. Woo hoo!!! I am going to join a nearby gym soon and start doing some weight training to increase muscle mass and further boost my sluggish metabolism. In a couple weeks, we are going to attend the Calgary Stampede, which is something I have wanted to do for many, many years. Then when we really get into the dog days of summer, we are going to go camping for a few days in Jasper Provincial Park, in the Rocky Mountains. We are also going to go visit the badlands and Dinosaur Provincial Park which is something else I am excitedly looking forward to. Well that's my summer so far and the reasons I have been neglecting my... | |

| | Have you planned a vacation for this year? | | Are you planning to travel? or stay at home and catch up on chores? If you are going to travel, where would you like to go? how will you go - car, train, plane, bicycle? How far from home will you go? Do you visit family or friends when you travel? I'm hoping to travel from Ohio to S. Dakota (in the U.S.) in the fall. A lot will depend on the health of our family. We have a person with cancer in our family and if he is very critical by then, our plans will change.Have you been to S. Dakota? I haven't. What should we look for? What shouldn't we miss?I want to explore the Native American Indian country, see the Badlands, and Mt. Rushmore. I like visiting National and State Parks. We would either drive from home or fly to S. Dakota and rent a car. A lot depends on how much time we can be away. What do you like to do on vacation? | |

| | Doors closing on fleeing Iraqis | | AMMAN — They are not sitting in camps, or straggling through the desert. In fact, any Western visitor to Jordan might not even notice them. But this country now plays host to up to one million Iraqis who have fled the fighting in their country. Up to a million are in nearby Syria. And there are big numbers in Iraq’s other neighbouring countries. After nearly four years of war, they know they are not about to return home any time soon. The hidden crisis is beginning to demand the world’s attention. At the desert border crossing with Iraq, you see the Iraqi families arriving. Their belongings are piled high in GMCs, big American 10-seater vehicles that race across the badlands of western Iraq. The Iraqis here will tell you of their relief after running the gauntlet of American soldiers, Iraqi insurgents, and the many bandits, that make this one of the most notorious journeys in the world. | |

Lost in the Desert
(Author unknown)So, there's a man crawling through the desert. He'd decided to try his SUV in a little bit of cross-country travel, had great fun zooming over the badlands and through the sand, got lost, hit a big rock, and then he couldn't get it started again. There were no cell
phone towers anywhere near, so his cell phone was useless. He had no family, his parents had died a few years before in an auto accident, and his few
friends had no idea he was out here.He stayed with the car for a day or so, but his one bottle of water ran out
and he was getting thirsty. He thought maybe he knew the direction back, now
that he'd paid attention to the sun and thought he'd figured out which way
was north, so he decided to start walking. He figured he only had to go
about 30 miles or so and he'd be back to the small town he'd gotten gas in
last.He thinks about walking at night to avoid the heat and sun, but based upon
how dark it actually was the night before, and given that he has no
flashlight,... | |
