Talk about the Joni Mitchell music that you love here!| Controversy: New Album by Joni Mitchell | | Actually it is on the streets since las December, but unfortunately, I only heard about it yesterday, browsing on the internet... it is called "Shine" and she claims it to be "her most serious work of ever". I love what I have heard of its music! it is very thought provocking and full of different feelings and emotions about the world of nowadays... I had heard before that she was retired and she would never record anymore, so I was very happy when I heard about this... but I wonder why I didn't heard that much on the media about "the return of Joni"... is it a political affair? is it because of her social denounce that is not "politically correct"?
| | | | A Tribute to Joni Mitchell | | April 24th will see the release of "A tribute to joni mitchell", a collection of Joni's songs interpreted by an eclectic group of artists.I am a fan of tribute albums...even while acknowledging that many of them can be cheesy...and this one is of special interest not only because of Mitchell's amazing songs but also because the artists involved include some of my favorites. Included on the disc will be Emmylou Harris (covering "The Magdelene Laundries"), Cassandra Wilson ("For the Roses"), Prince ("A Case of You"), Bjork ("Boho Dance"), Elvis Costello ("Edith and the Kingpin"), Sufjan Stevens ("Free Man in Paris"), Annie Lennox ("Ladies of the Canyon"), k.d. lang ("Help Me"), James Taylor ("River"), Brad Mehldau ("Don't Interrupt the Sorrow", and Caetano Veloso ("Dreamland".Clips of the songs...both the covers and Joni's originals...are available at http://www.atributetojonimitchell.com/There are comments about Mitchell from some of the artists also posted on that site. | |
| | Cold Case - U2-Using Music in TV Episodes | | Critics seem to really hate that shows like Cold Case use music in their episodes or close the episodes with what they call "music videos." They think it's manipulative or something. I think it's terrific, personally. The music can be so evocative of an era or a mood. I remember in a "Without a Trace" episode when the detectives were searching for a young girl who'd had a baby and they closed the episode with "Little Green." It hit THE chord for me because it was joni mitchell, one of my favorites,*and* a song I had always related to, having been a young unwed mother myself. I cried like a baby.Last night Cold Case did something different. They used U2 music but not necessarily from the year the show was covering. The U2 music went back to the 80s although the episode was set in early 2000s. It was, however, appropriate to the situations. My only problem was in liking U2 so much it was taking me away from the story. What use of "background music" has struck the strongest chord with you on a television show? Did it bring back personal memories or was it just especially evocative of the times? | |
| | Do you pledge to fight 'blue sky thinking'? | | August was a washout, September looks like getting half its rainfall in the first week! - Yes, I am talking about Britain here! Therehave been days this summer that caught us unawares and were warm enough for shirtsleeves. Days when the topic of conversation among strangers was 'how warm it is' (with surprise and pleasure).Oh, I am not really grumbling. I enjoy the rain, actually, especially good hard, lashing rain such as we have had tonight. Here in the dry East of England, that sort of rain is not as common as it is in the West. I have even been known to enjoy holidays in Cornwall and Wales when it seemed that the rain was set for a week. Sailing a small boat in the rain has a charm all its own ... the feeling that you can't get any wetter than you are already makes capsizing less of a disaster and baling does keep you warm. There is also the thankful knowledge that a bright driftwood fire will be burning in the grate and hot soup and wine are on the menu when you have dragged the boat up the shingle to its resting place by the wall.In between the showers, there is sunshine painting the clouds a dazzling white and bedecking every wet blade of grass and... | |
| | This Has to do with Woodstock... | | I am trying to find the name of the group and the title of a song i heard years ago. I only have pieces of the lyrics of the song can anybody out there help me with te title and artists. The piece of lyric goes like this "...by the time I got to woodstock, they were ..." . I believe the song is about the crowd at woodstock that year | |
| | | Audition songs | | If you were a singer and American Idol came to your city (or somewhere close enough to travel) would you audition? Which song would you pick? A girl on Tuesday night's show came prepared with two songs, Umbrella and Bubbly, and let the judges pick which one they wanted to hear (thank the gods they picked Bubbly cause I can't stand Umbrella....it makes me want to cause Rhianna severe bodily harm).I have given this a lot of thought and I kind of think I would want to do something that they don't hear seven hundred times a day... Some of my choices are a little obscure but being in the music industry I would hope they would be familiar with a broad selection and not just the Billboard Hot 100.I have thought ofDeep Red Bells by Neko Case, the Charlie Chaplin standardSmile (which I used to sing all the time when I was a little kid),A Case of You by Joni Mitchell,This Time Imperfect by AFI (no, really, it is a terrific vocal melody with a lot of highs and lows, and I can easily jump it up an octave to fit my range). What about you? Given it any thought? | |
| | My cousin (in law) has released two music CDs | | Most of his songs of his first CD I like more than my absolute all time favorites! (Ritchie Haven's "Freedom" and Joni Mitchell's "Coyote")I can really relate to the first song "Alone" - being a person who writes - and I'm sure we all can relate to it in one way or another.. "Blazing Sun" is awesome too! There's a lot of joy (and some boogie woogie too!) in his songs.. And such peace (and joy) in "Lavender rose" and "Here in This Small Town". But when I get to "Forever and Beyond" I can't help but have 'church'!Some of his music reminds me of Paul McCartney..Then "Telemarketers" sends me on my way with laughter.. (Unless I listen to the CD all over again!!)you can play clips here if I've tweaked any interest:http://cdbaby.com/cd/tomnickerson (I love this CD!!)
http://cdbaby.com/cd/tomnickerson2 (his 2nd CD is now out, but I haven't ordered yet til I finish my Christmas gift list!)Do you have any relatives or friends who are serious musicians? I know a few..
